The Project
Al Diwaniyah water treatment plant is a mega water treatment plant located in the Al Diwaniyah city southern of Iraq.
This project is consider the biggest water treatment plant operating in the middle and southern of Iraq; the project key features are:

Total capacity : 264,000 M³/day
Piping work: DIP Pipes= 20,500m of 1000mm and 12,300 of 800mm
Pumping stations are consisting of treatment plant pumping as below:
Treatment plant stations pumping to south network @ 88,000 m³/day
Treatment plant stations pumping to north network @ 44,000 m³/day
Treatment plant stations pumping to Booster station 1 @ 88,000 m³/day
Treatment plant stations pumping to Booster station 2 @ 44,000 m³/day
Two booster station capacity of 88,000 m³/day and 44,000 m³/day
Ground storage tanks:
Ground storage tank capacity of 24,000 M³
Ground storage tank capacity of 10,000 M³
Ground storage tank capacity of 10,000 M³
Technology:

The object of Diwaniyah water supply scheme is to treat large
volume of water to serve Diwaniyah city, the scope of the project
is the design of a complete water supply and treatment with
required equipment accordingly to, conveyance to, construction,
erection and testing, in compliance with the drawings, specification
and quantities as per volume I and Volume II in said tender
Al - Diwaniyah Water Treatment Plant.
The plant output is 264,000 m³/22hrs i.e. 12000m³/hr.
Three feeding pipes via 1200mm and 40m long each are delivered draw raw water from the Diwaniyah river to suction well-constructed of RC of open top for easy monitoring and inspection, the base of thee tank slopped to suction chamber with level of 13,5 meter which is the level of river bed as well to insure the full water flow and easy to emptying the tank, then 9 ( 6w+3S) horizontal split case pumps each of Q=2100m3/hr. at 16m total head for direct suction via 9 pipes , each pipe of 700mm and of 15m long, and suction is direct from pumping the water via 3 pipes 1000mm diameter directly to the receiving well and that penstock valves are provided for each line.
From receiving well water is delivered to 3 flash mixers by 3 pipes each diameter of 1000mm, the flash mixer forms an integral part with distribution tanks, control chamber sludge disposal, and balanced tank for collection of settled water, into the flow of raw water at the flash mixer aluminum sulphate and chlorine solution are added the first at flocculants and the second one as pre-disinfection. water is delivered from the 3 flash mixers at controlled equal amount by 12 pipes each of 600mm to 12 Clariflocculators ( grouped into 4 clarifiers per stream) the Clariflocculators having a central flocculating chamber 14 meter internal diameter and 38 internal diameter of the outer settling zone, the outlet of each settled water from Clariflocculators is 700mm diameter to control basin, settled water is delivered directly to balance tank and the sludge is removed by scrappers to the sludge chambers; the diameter of the sludge outlet from each Clariflocculators 300mm, the diameter of the 3 common sludge to the sludge pit is 1000mm, the sludge from the sludge pit is delivered by 4 sludge pumps to river by 800mm the length of the pipe according to site requirement, there are 9 nos backwash water pumps (6W+3S).
Settled water is delivered by its static head using 3 sets each of 2 pipes each 900mm diameter pipe from control chamber to the filters building, the diameter of wash water pipe to each filter is 600mm and the diameter of filtered water outlet of each filter is 300mm, the diameter of sludge pipe from each filter 600mm, the air inlet pipe to each filter is 200mm, from these channels water is equally delivered to 60 rapid gravity sand filter , each 50m2 effective area from the filters clear water flows into large ground storage tank constructed adjacent to the pump house building and delivered by 3(1200) mm pipe, water is again disinfected prior to entering the ground storage tank, a separate over flow from ground storage tank is driven by gravity to the river by 1500mm and by pass to the sludge pit by 1500mm.
The water from the treated ground storage tank at T.P. is delivered by 10 nos split case high lift pump to:
-
Network of Diwaniyah north @ 2 pumps.
-
Network of Diwaniyah South @ 2 pumps.
-
Boosting station at north district (BS1) @ 3 pumps.
-
Boosting station at south district (BS2) @ 3 pumps
The water from each BOOSTING STATION-1 (BS1) at NORTH DISTRICT is delivered by 12 Nos. split case high lift pumps to below:
-
To city network nodes @ 4 pumps.
-
To Elevated storage tank (2270M³) @ 4 pumps.
-
To city network nodes @ 4 pumps.
The water from each BOOSTING STATION-2 (BS2) at SOUTH DISTRICT is delivered by 12 Nos. split case high lift pumps to below:
-
To city network nodes @ 4 pumps.
-
To Elevated storage tank (2270M³) @ 4 pumps.
-
To city network nodes @ 4 pumps.
